NEW DELHI: The death toll in the fire at Vivek Vihar Children's Hospital in east Delhi rose to seven with the death of another child on Friday. A 50-day-old girl, who was undergoing treatment, succumbed to her injuries in the morning, police said.
“Four days before the incident, the girl had been admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties. She was on supplemental oxygen when the fire broke out inside the building,” a senior police official said.
The girl lives with her family in New Ashok Nagar and her parents come from an economically disadvantaged family.
The incident occurred at 11.30pm on Saturday, when police received a call for a PCR test regarding the fire. Twelve children were rescued but six died. “Six pediatric patients were on ventilator support while five were on oxygen therapy at the hospital,” a police officer said.
The hospital's owner, Dr Naveen Khich, and Dr Akash, who was working there on the day of the incident, have been arrested. Investigations have revealed glaring irregularities in the running of the hospital. It was revealed that the hospital's license had expired on March 31 this year, yet it continued to function unhindered.
