NEW DELHI: In the wake of the recent fire incidents in the city, the Delhi Municipal Corporation has announced immediate precautionary measures to strengthen fire safety across civic premises. The measures will be implemented in hospitals, clinics, schools, community centres, parking lots, district offices and other buildings where large gatherings take place.

“All concerned officials have been directed to implement fire safety instructions which include inspection of fire extinguishing systems, electrical load audit, installation of smoke detectors, fire alarms and automatic water sprinkler systems,” it said in a statement on Thursday.

The main focus of the measures is ensuring the functionality of fire suppression systems, performing regular maintenance, and installing mandatory fire protection equipment. City staff are instructed to inspect fire extinguishers, hydrants, and alarms to ensure they are accessible, working, and up to date. To maintain their readiness, cities are mandating monthly inspections of fire extinguishers and quarterly testing of fire alarms and hydrants.

Additionally, electrical load audits are conducted every two years to assess power consumption, especially in high demand areas such as the ICU. Safety protocols also include a strict no-smoking policy and heat source controls in areas with oxygen tanks.
