First Air Guard Mission 331 Squadron
In mid-January 2024, the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) deployed four F-35A Lightning II fighter jets to Keflavik Air Base (Iceland) to carry out NATO air patrol missions.
Although it is already the fourth year that the Norwegian Air Force's F-35As have been deployed to Iceland, this is the first time that the 331st Scoobadron has led the mission since reactivating at Åland Air Base (the main air base). The contingent is made up of personnel from various branches of the 131st and 132nd Wings.
The main mission of Icelandic Air Guard (IAP) is to carry out the Readiness for Quick Response Alert (QRA) mission, which is carried out on behalf of NATO around the clock. It is a routine mission that Norway carries out daily using F-35s from Evenes Air Base.
Fighter squadrons within the RNoAF do not carry individual squadron markings. The aircraft operate from a pool, with the two F-35 squadrons controlled by 132 Luftving in Åland. The aircraft feature the familiar triangle and arrow design, a subdued version of the Norwegian flag. Hopefully in future they will carry individual unit markings.
FMA (Forsvarsmateriell, the Norwegian Defence Materiel Organisation) is responsible for defence materiel.
