DUBAI – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that the number of airline CEOs adhering to the IATA Safety Leadership Charter has reached 73. This reinforces the aviation industry's already strong safety culture that has contributed to the best-ever results in 2023, including zero fatalities for IATA member airlines and airlines registered with the IATA Operational Safety Audit.
“Strong leadership and a strong safety culture are interdependent – and both are necessary to drive continuous improvement in safety performance. By signing the IATA Safety Leadership Charter, 73 airline CEOs are setting an example for their airlines and the industry. In doing so, the Charter serves as a call to action that focuses on airline CEOs' critical obligation to lead a safety culture that keeps passengers and staff safe,” said IATA Director General Willie Walsh.
The IATA Safety Leadership Charter was developed in consultation with IATA Members and the aviation industry at large, with the aim of supporting industry executives in fostering a positive safety culture within their organisations, based on eight leadership principles.
Reinforce safety through both words and actions. Increase safety awareness among employees, leadership teams, and the board of directors. Lead in integrating safety into business strategy, processes, and performance measurements. Build internal capacity to proactively manage safety and jointly achieve the organization's safety goals. Create an atmosphere of trust where all employees feel responsible for safety and are encouraged and expected to report safety-related information. Establish a work environment where clear expectations of acceptable and unacceptable behavior are communicated and understood. Create an environment where all employees feel responsible for safety. Regularly evaluate and improve the organization's safety culture.
