Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said fire audits and electrical safety audits of hospitals and other public places should be carried out regularly.
Several major fire incidents have been reported across India in the past few weeks. On May 25, a massive fire broke out at BabyCare Newborn Hospital in Delhi, killing seven children. Another major fire in the gambling area of Rajkot killed 27 people.
Earlier in the day, chairing a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg-7 to review the ongoing heatwave situation in the country and monsoon preparedness, he stressed the need for proper drills on regular basis for prevention and control of fires.
During the meeting, PM Modi said there is a need to organise regular drills for maintaining forest fire lines and productive utilisation of biomass.
“The Prime Minister was apprised about the usefulness of the ‘Van Agni’ portal in timely identification and management of forest fires,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
“During the meeting, it was apprised of the Prime Minister that as per the India Meteorological Department forecast, heat wave conditions are likely to continue in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
This year’s monsoon is expected to be normal or above normal in most parts of the country, but below normal in parts of peninsular India.
The meeting was also attended by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Cabinet Secretary, Minister of Home Affairs, Secretary Ministry of Earth Sciences, Director General NDRF, Member Secretary NDMA and other senior officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and concerned ministries and departments.
Most states in northern and central India are experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in many cities.
