Solar Panel Drone Thermography Inspection — IEC 62446-3 Compliant | Pan-India | Elion

Elion Technologies has inspected solar assets from 1MW rooftop installations to 500MW ground-mounted farms across India. Our drone thermography service identifies every thermal fault in your plant — hotspot cells, bypass diode failures, PID, soiling, and string faults — in a single inspection, without any plant shutdown, fully compliant with IEC 62446-3 Level 2 inspection standards.

The Problem We Solve

Solar plants lose between 3% and 12% of their potential annual generation to thermal faults that are invisible to plant operators. SCADA monitoring tells you a string is underperforming. It does not tell you why, or which of the 600 modules in that string has the fault. A drone thermography inspection gives you a GPS-tagged map of every thermal anomaly in the plant, classified by severity, with recommended actions — in 48 hours.

What We Detect

Defect Type

Thermal Signature

IEC 62446-3 Class

Typical Generation Impact

Hotspot cells

Single-cell warm patch, 10 to 40 degrees above mean

Class 1 to 3 depending on delta-T

Accelerated degradation, fire risk at severe stage

Bypass diode failure

Rectangular sub-module warm patch — one third module size

Class 2 to 3

Loss of 33% generation from affected module

PID — Potential Induced Degradation

Systematic cool patches at string edges

Class 2 to 3

5 to 30% generation loss from affected strings

String open-circuit fault

Entire string cooler than adjacent strings

Class 3

100% loss of generation from that string

Soiling

Irregular cool patches on module surface

Class 1 to 2

2 to 8% generation loss per soiled module

Delamination

Irregular thermal non-uniformity across module

Class 2 to 3

Accelerated degradation, possible moisture ingress

Our Inspection Process

  1. Pre-inspection planning: irradiance and weather check, DGCA compliance verification, flight path design
  2. Ground baseline: IV curve sampling on representative strings, irradiance measurement, ambient temperature log
  3. Aerial thermal survey: 640×512 thermal sensor, simultaneous RGB capture, 100% module coverage
  4. Data analysis: anomaly identification, IEC 62446-3 classification, GPS tagging, module ID assignment
  5. Report delivery: full IEC 62446-3 report, anomaly table, annotated aerial map, priority maintenance list within 48 hours

Instruments use in water audit

  • Ultrasonic / Electromagnetic Flow Meters for accurate measurement of water flow in pipelines and processes.

  • Portable Water Flow Meters to assess water usage where permanent meters are not installed.

  • Pressure Gauges to analyze distribution pressure, identify leakages, and assess system performance.

  • Digital Water Meters to monitor consumption, trends, and baseline water usage.

  • Water Quality Testing Instruments to evaluate water characteristics and reuse or recycling potential.

  • Water Level Sensors / Level Indicators to monitor storage tanks, sumps, and inflow–outflow balance

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

No. Drone thermography requires the plant to be operating at normal generation levels. Shutting down eliminates the thermal contrast needed to identify faults. Our drones operate at planned altitudes that do not interfere with plant operations or personnel.

For most plants, one annual inspection is the minimum. We recommend post-monsoon inspection in September and October in most of India. Plants with known performance issues, plants over 5 years old, or plants in high-dust or high-humidity environments benefit from twice-yearly inspection.

Yes. We inspect rooftop installations from 100kW upward including industrial rooftops, commercial complexes, and warehouse-top installations. For rooftop inspections, we assess access requirements and obtain necessary permissions from the building owner as part of project mobilisation.
