Cambridge city councillor advocates for traffic calming measures

Traffic calming measures could be introduced to Preston's popular King Street Bypass if local councillors get their way.

Councilman Corey Kimpson, who represents Cambridge's 3rd Ward, requested a road safety audit of Laurel Street between Duke and Eagle streets, as well as Duke Street itself.

Laurel Street is frequently used by drivers to avoid the daily traffic on King Street, and local residents are concerned about pedestrian safety.

“It's an issue that a lot of people have contacted us about,” Kimpson said on The Mike Farwell Show. “It's a common area with significant crashes, and it's also an area that a lot of pedestrians cross, and kids walking to school, so this is something that absolutely needs to be looked at and we need to move forward as quickly as possible.”

There is increased urgency to take steps to slow traffic because a major housing construction project will soon begin at 777 Laurel St., which will only compound the problem.

Of course, safety audits come with a cost, which will need to be factored into the 2025 budget, which the City Council is currently working on developing.

Kimpson believes the information gathered will be worth the cost.

“By running it as a pilot, we can ask ourselves, 'Does this work for us?', 'How long will this take?' Will it generate information that will be useful to us?”

Kimpson said the information could be used to address traffic issues and other areas of the city.

She said with safety concerns there is no time to waste and she expects the council to quickly approve the audit.
